Mac Miller – Come Up Show Freestyle

Who said Mac Miller couldn’t rap?!? WELL YOU WERE WRONG. It’s clear that this is a mix of pre-written and off-the-top raps, but either way it sounds good. Seriously, who could listen to this and say the kid has no skill and/or potential? A hater could. SMH.

Chiddy Bang – Heatwave (feat. Mac Miller)

Well this is an unsurprising and gratifying collaboration. These youngins are all doing their thing, and this song displays what they all do best- Mac & Chiddy spit real well over a beat with an ill sample from Xaphoon ==> FTW! Shouts to my girl rgindz for the hook up.

XXL‘s 2011 Freshman Mixtape

As I previously mentioned, I was the the Freshman Showcase at BB Kings (in NYC) yesterday, and it was incredible. Kendrick, CyHi, and KRIT had the best performances, which came as no surprise to me. CyHi also brought out Big Sean & Pusha T, while Kendrick performed with Schoolboy Q, so that was dope. Mac Miller’s performance was cool too, and Fred The Godson held NY down by killing it (admittedly to my surprise). I hate to report, however, that Lil Twist and Diggy Simmons acted their age, and that is not really a good thing. I think Diggy will get better as the years pass (he just turned 16…), but at this point he sounds like Bow Wow in his “Like Mike” years. The only missing link from the show was LIL B BASED GOD!! Haha I actually thought his show would be entertaining, but apparently he had a previous commitment. Anyway, here is the tape that XXL put together with songs from each of the artists. XXL Freshman Cyphers

Each of the 2011 XXL Freshmen got a chance to spit with some of their compadres from the cover. DJ Kast One provides the youngins with their backdrop. Part 2 ==> FTW

  1. YG, Mac Miller, Diggy Simmons, and Lil Twist
  2. Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar, Lil B and CyHi Da Prynce
  3. Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T and Fred Da Godson

Side Note: The reason I did not post the solo freshman freestyles is because XXL really found a way to make them all wack. They put some unnecessary effects and cut them poorly. If you would like to view them, you can visit their website.

Mac Miller – Best Day Ever

The Pittsburgh native and recent XXL freshman drops this tape at a pretty smart time, considering he must be getting a lot of press for the cover he was on. I must say that I have realized over time that he is pretty underrated, and that is also saying he used to be by me. His music is both fun and thoughtful. Production on this tape comes mostly from ID Labs, but also from King Blue of the Sore Losers, Chuck Inglish, Khrysis, and the legendary Just Blaze. Features come from his always-faded Rostrum Records labelmate Wiz Khalifa and the little brother Phonte. Read more for the track list & download link.

XXL Presents: The 2011 Freshmen Roundtable

When the 11 XXL Freshmen got together for the cover shoot, they also held a roundtable discussion. A lot of interesting things are said, and you can hear some of the artists speak like you have never heard them before.
